Finally officially opened on January 31, 2025. Followed by a sunny and cold sunday, perfect to make some pictures.
The ambitious renovation project, designed by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, was initiated to modernize the station and turn it into a major transportation hub. Calatrava, known for his futuristic and fluid architectural style, designed the new station to feature:
- A sweeping white steel-and-glass structure, providing a sense of openness and light.
- A pedestrian bridge linking the two sides of the city, improving connectivity between the historic center and newer districts.
- Improved accessibility, with modern platforms, escalators, and elevators to enhance the travel experience.
- Integration with other transportation, including bus connections and parking facilities.
The reconstruction of the Mons station began in 2013, with initial expectations for completion by 2015—in time for Mons’ role as European Capital of Culture. However, due to various delays and budget overruns, the project has been significantly delayed.
