Saturday we leave early in the morning for a citytrip to Berlin. It is not the first time we visit the capital of Germany, so we can relax and visit some off the beaten track spots. Our hotel is close to Potsdamer Platz, which is quite central and easy to reach by public transport.

Day 1

On the first day we have an afternoon to spend, and we start in the area of the hotel with a remaining watch tower from the Wall era. We cannot imagine how life must have been till the late 80’s. There are some great street art spots as well. After a quick bite we take a trip to the Gasometer.

This is something different than the ones we have in Ghent, which are completely devastated. We meet the other people and our guide with whom we will go on top of this rusty (but stable and safe) structure. From the top we have a fabulous but ice cold view over Berlin, and we get some great stories from our guide. After this we make a last stop at the Park Inn viewing point at Alexander Platz to see the sunset.

Day 2

Unfortunately the quick bite from Saturday has left some trays, as Aranka is sick the next day. We try to make the best out of it anyway. The memorial for the murdered Jews is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel, and on a Sunday morning very peaceful. At the Brandenburger Tor tourists are waking up slowly. And at Tiergarten we see mainly Berliners having a nice run.

The Carillon is not open to visit, but it is a nice spot, and just around the corner is the Haus der Kultur der Welten. In the afternoon we want to take a tour at Tempelhof Airport, but all the tours are fully booked. Next time we should order online … We walk around the airfield and the cemeteries around.

In the area there are some great street art pieces and by the time we get around we can go to Pappa e Ciccia, our favourite Berlin restaurant.

Day 3

On Monday, our last day, we take it easy as well. In the morning we walk through Tiergarten to the Siegessäule. In the afternoon we want to visit the Palace of Tears, an important site in the Wall history of Berlin. But unfortunately the building is closed. There aren’t many places open on Monday’s, but Berlin is a great city to spend your time outdoors! After a healthy and light dinner (still sick) we grab our bag at the hotel and leave the city. We have booked a room at a hotel near the airport, because we are heading home very early in the morning.

This was not the best trip to Berlin, but next time we’ll stay healthy!
